RESIDENTIAL MOVING CHECKLIST

We know moving is a stressful life event, and sometimes the stress itself fogs our thinking. By giving yourself enough time to plan ahead, you can keep track of your to-do list, making life a lot easier. Here’s a moving checklist to help keep your schedule organized:

  • Obtain a free quote with a mover as far in advance as possible. Couple your own expenses with your quoted price to come up with a budget.
  • Track your moving expenses to stay within your moving budget. Hold on to your receipts and log your expenses.
  • Purge your home by sorting through everything and either selling, donating, recycling, or throwing away anything that isn’t joining you in your new home.
  • Considering holidays, weather, and any time constraints, plan your departure date. Schedule the date with the moving company.
  • Begin packing up your belongings well ahead of your departure date – if the moving company isn’t packing for you.
  • Schedule the utilities to be turned on in your new house and turned off in the old one.
  • Discontinue delivery services, including the mail and newspaper.
  • Complete the change-of-address form with the post office online or in-person. And inform businesses such as your bank, your insurance companies, and your doctors of your new address.
  • Confirm with the moving company that everything’s on track. Re-check payments, dates, times, and anything additional they’re handling for you.
